Professional Experience
Before commencing his law studies, Mr. Mehler passed the “patent bar” examination. He practiced as a patent agent with the Chicago office of an international patent and trademark firm while pursuing his full time law studies. In 1974, Mr. Mehler joined the law department of a major corporation, where he further developed his skills in patent practice and gained valuable experience in trademark, copyright, trade secret and litigation matters. This experience in counseling in a large corporate context included exposure to business relationships involving intellectual property and other legal issues. In 1977, Mr. Mehler joined a predecessor to the present firm, where he continued to specialize in patent, trademark, copyright and unfair competition causes, in agreement drafting, and in various phases of litigation.
During his many years of specialized experience, Mr. Mehler’s practice has spanned a full range of intellectual property law matters, including procuring, enforcing and defending against patents, trademarks and copyrights in the U.S. and internationally. His extensive experience has encompassed U.S. suits and appeals, interferences, oppositions and cancellations, as well as assisting European counsel in court proceedings, in oppositions, and before the European Technical Board of Appeal. Mr. Mehler has represented clients of diverse sizes and types, in fields such as food science and engineering, medical devices and compositions, software and related methods, agricultural products and equipment, consumer goods, components for the electronic industry, and products for rail and vehicle use.
