Cook Alex partner elected Vice President of IPLAC

CHICAGO, IL—May 15, 2008  Cook Alex attorney Edward D. Manzo was elected Vice President of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) for 2008-09 at IPLAC's annual meeting held May 13, 2008 at the University Club in Chicago.  In addition, outgoing IPLAC President Jim Sobieraj presented an award to Mr. Manzo for outstanding service as IPLAC's 2007-08 membership chairman.

Mr. Manzo has worked exclusively in IP law since 1975.  He is a member of the bars of New York, Illinois, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.  He is one of the founders of Cook Alex, where his practice focuses on IP litigation, counseling, opinions, and managing patent prosecution.  He occasionally serves as a mediator in patent disputes.  Mr. Manzo represented IPLAC as amicus curiae in (1) Phillips v. AWH Corp. 415 F.3d 1303 (Fed. Cir. 2005 en banc), the only en banc case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit directed to patent claim interpretation; (2) Illinois Tool Works v. Independent Ink, 547 U.S. 28, 126 S.Ct.1281 (2006) regarding patent/anti-trust presumptions; and (3) KSR Intl v. Teleflex, 550 U.S. ___, 127 S.Ct. 1727 (2007) (Of Counsel) regarding patent obviousness.  He is the originator and editor-in-chief of Claim Construction in the Federal Circuit published by Thomson West and available on Westlaw as database CLAIMCFC.  He is a frequent lecturer and panelist throughout the United States on patent law for continuing legal education organizations, bar associations, and law schools.   From 2005-08, he has worked actively in preparing “pattern” jury instructions for use in patent jury trials for the Pattern Jury Instruction Committee of the Seventh Circuit.  Mr. Manzo has a degree in Physics from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and a law degree from the State University of New York. He is listed in publications including Who’s Who in the World.
